Comet Machholz Returns for the Fifth Time

image235

This movie shows Comet 96P/Machholz passing through the STEREO COR2 field of view (Oct. 26-28, 2017). Most of the solar corona has been suppressed in this movie to bring out the comet, leaving only the time varying part showing the flow of the solar wind.  Combined observations from STEREO and the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) can provide valuable information about the composition of the comet. This is the fifth time that this comet has been observed from space. Credit: STEREO/NASA.
