Spurting Active Region

image151

An active region, seen in profile, produced a series of spurting plasma jets as magnetic forces fought it out over a two-day period (Mar. 26-27, 2011). The STEREO (Behind) spacecraft observed the action in extreme ultraviolet light. With its perspective from about 90 degrees behind Earth's orbital location, the active region was, thus, facing Earth. No major solar storms blasted out during this time, but the active region still put on a good show.
