Active Region Worth Watching

image140

While old active region 1112 is just rotating into view on Nov. 5 for the Solar Dynamics Observatory, the STEREO (Behind) spacecraft was in position (almost 90 degrees behind Earth?s orbit around the Sun) to watch it in extreme ultraviolet light as it produced several smaller flares (Nov. 3, 2010). It will be numbered 1121. One flare produced a quick flash around noon during this video clip and also sent out several waves of plasma across part of the Sun?s surface. It could be a solar storm producer as it comes to face Earth more directly over the next few days.
