CME from STEREO’s COR1 instrument — January 24, 2007

This is one of the first movies from STEREO’s SECCHI COR1 instrument to show a series of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) blasting out from the Sun (Jan. 24, 2007). The COR1 coronagraph blocks out the Sun and a little more of the area around it so that the faint structures of a CME can be observed. Here we cropped in on the full disk image to better show details of the CMEs. The field of view of this coronagraph shows details of events closer to the Sun than either of the two coronagraphs currently operating on SOHO. The Sun is represented by the white circle that you see here superimposed on the occulting disk (the larger black circle).
