Double CMEs

image158

The Sun blasted out two coronal mass ejections, one almost immediately following the other over about half a day as seen by the STEREO Behind spacecraft (Nov. 3-4, 2011). As observed with the combined COR1 and COR2 coronagraphs (as well as the Sun itself in extreme UV light) , the first event heads away from Earth (Earth is to the right) and the second large blast headed right towards the spacecraft, with the expanding particles forming a kind of halo all around the Sun. In the still, the first event is seen as the lighter arc to the left and the second event is the bright area above the Sun in the green (COR1) area.
